Each year, CPHRs are required to complete professional development activities to meet the National requirement for continuous growth and learning through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours. The base requirements for CPD are;

  • a minimum of 10 hours of CPD activities each year,
  • a minimum total of 60 hours of CPD activities gained in at least two of the qualifying categories over any cumulative three-year period
  • and the completion of three (3) hours of ethics training course every three (3) years.

It is our job as your association to not only ensure you are aware of your requirements and enforce the standards but to also provide access and education around all the ways you can meet this requirement.

In our ever-changing world, it is important to CPHR Alberta and the Professional Standards team that we offer a variety of opportunities to earn CPD hours. We aim to offer ways to earn hours that are both accessible in time and financial commitment. CPD should not be a burden, it should be engaging, and value-adding to your career and professional growth. It is also a wonderful way to connect with the HR community and give back to professionals who are early in their HR careers.

In 2021, we began our CPD Tips section in the Chartered monthly e-newsletters. Each month we look to highlight new ways to earn hours, this could be a new topic, delivery method, or engagement with a new partner. The e-newsletter is the best place to find monthly tips to help you stay up to date on your CPD hours for the year. You can view copies of this communication in your member profile under the Message History Report. If you are not receiving this communication but would like to, visit your Communication Preferences under the Menu options.

Over the past year and a half, we have highlighted opportunities such as:

  • Mentorships, both long-term and short term
  • Post-Secondary Career Fairs
  • HR Case Competition Judging and Case Writing
  • Resume Review and Interview Preparation Volunteering
  • HR Practicum Supervision
  • Networking
  • HR Clubs
  • Editorial Opportunities
  • Panel and Guest Speaker Opportunities

It is also important to know that our Professional Standards team is always available to assist you with your CPD requirement, whether that’s finding ways to earn hours, adding hours for leave or navigating your online log. Chartered members are encouraged to contact our team well in advance of the CPD log deadline, to ensure we can assist you prior to your CPD log being outstanding or having your designation revoked.

We will continue offering new and engaging ways to earn hours. Watch the CPD Tips section in our e-newsletter for opportunities outside of our traditional avenues.

As the governing voice of CPHR Alberta, the Board of Directors meet quarterly to provide oversight and guidance in several key areas. The Board, alongside CPHR Alberta operations, continues to deliver on the association's strategic priorities developed in the 2020 strategic plan. To ensure transparency between our Board of Directors, members and key stakeholders, we are sharing post-meeting messages to inform the steps taken towards advancing our profession and ensuring a financially stable association. The Board of Directors met on March 15, 2025, and the Board’s key messages are as follows: CPHR Alberta continues to advance the strategic priority to become a self-regulated association, supported by proposed amendments to Alberta's Professional Governance Act. This continues to be a priority for operations over the next year. We encourage you to join us at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Friday, May 9, 2025, to hear more about self-regulation. The Board approved the audited financial statements for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2024. Based on observations from the independent auditor, the association has effective reporting and control processes in place in addition to appropriate reserves for financial sustainability. Audit financial statements will be available in the 2024 Annual Report, distributed to members alongside our AGM Notice of Meeting in April. CPHR Alberta has launched an innovative new program for senior HR leaders working in executive-level roles, speaking to how the association is elevating the reputation of CPHR's and provided targeted professional development for HR professionals working at all levels in organizations. CPHRs can apply for the Executive Program by completing our application here. CPHR Alberta has aligned with CPHR Canada to approve mutual recognition with the Chartered Institute of Professional Management (CIPM) Nigeria and CIPM Sri Lanka. Learn more about the MRA here. The next Board meeting takes place in June 2025, after which we will again share our key messages. If you have any questions regarding these key messages or the Board of Directors, please contact chair@cphrab.ca . We welcome your feedback!
