What does mentorship mean to me? Mentorship has been a component of my career path since before I transitioned to human resources full time in 2001. The requirement to participate in mentorship is simply a willingness. The benefits can be great, both as a protégé and as a mentor. I have participated in the CPHRAB mentorship program in the current model and in the previous model and am grateful that this opportunity exists. Just like in life, not every connection has been as engaging as expected but I can share that overall it is a fun experience where I have always gained something.

As a protégé, having the opportunity to connect with a mentor is a significant barrier reduced for our professional development. Having the opportunity to share with someone who has been there and done that is powerful. Taking the challenge to share your experiences as a mentor can result in learning from a protégé as a benefit mentors may not realize is there. With the diversity of experiences, education and history in our association that members bring even connecting with someone with similar years of work history can bring a positive connection.

For me supporting those newer in their path towards becoming a designated human resources professional is a highlight. We all have our path that brought us towards human resources. Mine started in a completely different place and I enjoy the comparison to the path that many graduates have today. As a mentor, I have the opportunity to connect with others who have started on a different career path than I did. Sharing in this diversity with our community is a blessing. Giving my time towards mentorship in recognition of all those who took the time to connect with me in my career journey is humbling. Connecting with others is fun.

There have been many benefits experienced participating in mentorship on a personal and professional level. With the variety of options available, I encourage others to ask questions, join a webinar or simply try it out. While there are more highlights to share, I conclude this post with a question. If you are thinking about being a protégé or mentor, why are you waiting?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become part of the HR vocabulary. No longer a future ambition, many HR teams have been exploring why, how, and where AI could be used to unlock productivity, enhance capabilities, and deliver new value, as well as which technologies can deliver on this.
