About the Event

The HR Virtual Roundtable is a monthly opportunity for CPHR Alberta members to connect with other members and discuss current and/or emerging HR topics.

In this structured conversation, participants will be split into smaller breakout groups, offering members quality time to discuss topic questions, network with one another, share ideas and perspectives, receive support, and inspiration.  It goes without saying that confidentiality and the willingness to share are key to the success of this event.

For the September HR Roundtable, topic is Cynicism & Intelligence
  1. A recent interview with Dan Pink published in Atlassian has a quote from Dan, “There’s this phenomenon called the “cynical genius illusion”. It is that people who are cynical are perceived as smarter, in the same way that people who are negative are perceived as smarter. So, we have this biased thinking that cynicism and negativity makes somebody smarter. And the thing is, that’s not true. The cynical genius illusion is so insidious for civic society and also for organizational society.”  Check out the whole article here … Daniel Pink: Don’t be deceived by the “intelligent” voice of cynicism - Work Life by Atlassian.  What do you think of this statement?
  2. In the same interview, Dan goes on to say, “The better predictor of intelligence is the trait, not so much of optimism, but of openness.” Again, what do you think of this statement?
  3. How does this “cynical genius illusion” play out in the workplace?
